Working on the Brazos River Bridge (1)
Title:  Working on the Brazos River Bridge (1)
Description:  In late May 2016, record-breaking amounts of rain fell across much of Texas leading to vast amounts of flooding along rivers and streams. One such example was the Brazos River. At Richmond, about 30 miles southwest of Houston, the river rose about 40 feet and its flow rate increased by nearly 100,000 cubic feet per second. Also at Richmond, UP's Glidden Subdivision (part of the Sunset Route) crosses the Brazos and normally sits about 45 feet above the river's height. However, the flooding brought the river's height to just below the deck of the bridge (about 10 feet higher than shown here) and caused one of the bridge's main piers to sink about 6 feet. The bridge was taken out of service for about 20 days while crews worked around the clock to fix the bridge, and here crews are working to stabilize the bridge about a week after its initial sinking.
